Artisan food production is booming around the UK with more and more companies offering locally made, high-quality food in a wide range of styles. From breads to meats to cakes, the South Coast has any number of high-quality companies offering their products both for commercial purposes and to the general public.

Hungry Guest Artisan Bakery

The Hungry Guest is a bakery located in Chichester in West Sussex that has its own café on site and supplies some 70 businesses around Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Kent. The bakery has thirty varieties of bread on offer as well as pastries, cakes and a few favourites such as the chocolate brownie. They also have the only cheese maturing room in the country on site while the store offers essentials such as fruit, vegetables, milk and juice.

Simply Ice Cream

Kent based Simply Ice Cream is a frozen treat specialist based in Bonnington who have won numerous awards for their ice cream. Their Honeycomb Crunch ice cream has won four Gold Great Taste Awards and was featured by chef James Martin in the Saturday Kitchen show. They also have around 30 different flavours, often made with locally sourced fruit as well as top ingredients from around the world. As well as their own café, they supply businesses across Kent, Sussex, Essex, Surrey and London and can be found in both Waitrose and John Lewis food halls.

Fudge Kitchen

Fudge Kitchen has been producing amazing fudge for over 25 years from their base in Kent but is now available around the country. The fudge is unlike any other because it uses whipping cream rather than butter for a melt in the mouth texture. In addition to the range of fudge flavours the company also offer fudge sauces in five flavours and a new range of drinking fudge, fondue sets and gift boxes for special occasions.

Goddard Pies

While there are many newcomers to the artisan food industry along the South Coast, Goddard Pies definitely isn’t one of them. The company was established back in 1890 and is now run by the fourth generation of the same family. Pies are made by experienced bakers using locally sourced vegetables and all finished by hand. They offer local business delivery as well as purchasing from the bakery itself and have suppliers around the country.

Acer Leigh Posh Nosh

Fresh vegetables are at the core of many artisan foods and Acer Leigh is just the kind of place to source them from. Based in Sindlesham in Sussex, the company is operated by a couple with a background in horticulture and vegetable production that has led the site to produce some of the best baby vegetables and edible flowers available. All products are grown without chemicals and use biological controls to keep pests at bay while all plants are free from genetically modified seeds.

Best Michelin Starred Restaurant


While it may be no surprise that the highest number of Michelin star restaurants are within the boundaries of Greater London, more places around the country now boast one or two restaurants with this prestigious award. Along the south coast, we have a few that are definitely worth considering if you are in the area.

West Sussex

Gravetye Manor

Gravetye Manor is the perfect combination of high quality dining and a luxurious location that makes for a great experience. The manor itself was owned from 1884 until 1935 by William Robinson, one of the top gardeners of his time and he created the gardens that surround the property. The manor was originally built in 1598 and is now a Grade I listed building. There are even 17 bedrooms within the property, each named for a species of tree on the estate.

The restaurant is under Head Chef George Blogg, formerly of Le Champignon Sauvage and The Square, who has created a menu that perfectly blends the classis dishes that match the property with the modern touch that makes for a Michelin star restaurant.

Restaurant Tristan

Restaurant Tristan is in a 16th century building in the centre of Horsham and is operated by Tristan Mason, once of The Hare in Lambourn. The restaurant offers a clean and stylish setting for a menu that uses a lot of classic British dishes including guinea fowl, monkfish and pork belly, all touched with a little French-Italian mastery.


Great Fosters – The Tudor Room

The Tudor Room at Great Fosters in Egham is an intimate, 24 cover restaurant that offers lavishly decorated surroundings and high-quality food. The 17th century tapestry on one wall sets the mood for the visit while Head Chef Douglas Balish aims for simple cooking that has intense flavours and showcases his classical training perfectly.

The Glasshouse

Located in Richmond Upon Thames, the Glasshouse aims for a modern and comfortable venue to enjoy the cooking of Head Chef Berwyn Davies and his team. The restaurant is owned by Nigel Platts-Martin and Bruce Pool who also Own Chez Bruce in Wandsworth and La Trompette in Chiswick.


Chapter One

Chapter One is in Locksbottom and is a very modern and stylish restaurant that now has both a Michelin Star and four AA rosettes. The head chef is Andrew McLeish and the focus of the restaurant is to offer informal and relaxed dining with the very best quality food.

The Sportsman

The Sportsman may appear to be a typical pub restaurant but inside the work of chef Stephen Harris has created an interesting dining experience. The menu is focused around the idea of foraging from the woods and seas in the immediate area and claims that everything cooked comes from within view of the restaurant.

The West House Restaurant

This restaurant is in Biddenden and is one of the Flemish weaver’s cottages that line the high street of the village. This makes for a character-filled restaurant with wood fires and weathered beams. The result is a restaurant that offer top quality food but is also informal and relaxed in ambience.



JSW is in Petersfield and is short for Jake Saul Watkins, the chef and proprietor of the restaurant. It is in a 17th century coaching inn and has an impressive menu and equally impressive wine list with some 700 wines to choose from. The menu is focused around British seasonal food.

The Black Rat

The Black Rat in in Winchester and is a classic looking pub that holds a high-quality restaurant within it. Chef Jamie Stapleton-Burns has created a menu focused around locally sourced and seasonal produce that is served in a relaxed and cosy restaurant complete with a blazing fire.
